The former president’s prominent role during the trophy ceremony drew criticism.

Chelsea’s standout player, Cole Palmer, expressed his bewilderment after Donald Trump participated in the team’s celebration for winning the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup on Sunday.

As Chelsea captain Reece James lifted the championship trophy, Trump positioned himself directly in the midst of the celebrating players. Video footage appeared to capture FIFA President Gianni Infantino motioning for Trump to give the players their moment, but Trump did not move.

The Daily Mail went so far as to label the act a “gate-crash.”

“I was aware he would be in attendance, but I was not expecting him to be on the stage for the trophy lift, so it was a bit confusing,” stated Palmer. His two goals were crucial in Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, and he was also honored as the tournament’s most valuable player.

During the medal ceremony, the crowd booed Trump as he awarded the medals to the victorious Chelsea players. Earlier in the match, jeers had also erupted when Trump was featured on the stadium’s large screen.

Many on social media echoed the sentiment, accusing Trump of hijacking what should have been the team’s moment of glory.
